TORONTO, ONTARIO–(EMWNews – Aug. 15, 2008) – On Saturday August 16, 2008, between 9:00 a.m. and 6:00 p.m., Toronto Police Service – 51 Division in conjunction with the Regent Park community will be hosting the 7th annual three on three Regent Park Community “Building Bridges” basketball tournament.

The event will again be held at the outdoor courts located on St. Bartholomew Street at Regent Street just south of Dundas Street East.

One of the main goals of the tournament is to improve relations between youth, their families and their community. The three-on-three tournament provides an opportunity to promote Regent Park positively. It also has an impact towards building better relationships between the community and the service providers within the community including the police.

The event will begin with a breakfast for youth 14 years-of-age and under and their families. A number of guest speakers will be present including Mr. Paul Rich of Maritz Canada, a leading Canadian sales and marketing provider, to mentor the youth on making positive life choices as well as various career opportunities available to them.

In the afternoon, a barbeque lunch will be provided for the 160 participants as well as the 200 spectators and volunteers.

“Building Bridges” showcases Regent Park in a positive way and allows the youth to interact with local police and other community service providers in a relaxed and entertaining environment. This level of interaction improves communication, mutual respect and understanding amongst all the participants.
