CACE Technologies Celebrates Wireshark(R) Milestone

The Open Source Project Formerly Known as Ethereal Turns 10
DAVIS, Calif.–(EMWNews)–CACE Technologies, Inc., developer
of tools to enhance the Wireshark user experience and primary sponsor of
the Wireshark development effort, today celebrates the 10th
anniversary of the inception of the project that spawned the world’s
most popular and widely-deployed network analyzer.
To mark the day, Gerald Combs, Ethereal/Wireshark project founder, CACE,
and Wireshark University have announced the roll-out of the Wireshark
Certification Program and plans for the SHARKFEST ’09
conference, which will take place on the Stanford campus in June of 2009.
“In my wildest dreams, I never imagined that
Wireshark would be as enthusiastically received as it has been over the
past ten years,” states Gerald Combs. “I
have watched the number of downloads grow from a few thousand a month to
well over 300,000 today. The success of the analyzer is due to an
incredibly devoted group of developer contributors around the globe who
work closely with me to continually add new features and capabilities to
the tool to maintain its relevance and usefulness in modern, evolving
network environments. One of the reasons we created the SHARKFEST event
is to bring them together and show our appreciation for their efforts.”
SHARKFEST ’09, just announced officially, will
be the second occurrence of what is intended to be an annual conference
for Wireshark developers and users. This year, as with the inaugural
event, there will be three program tracks: Developer, Advanced User, and
General User. Unlike last year, there will be fewer sessions per track,
allowing more time for presentations and discussions, and duplications
of some of the more popular sessions. There will also be more panel and
open discussion forums.
John Bruno, CEO of CACE, offers, “We’re
very excited about the next SHARKFEST conference. We learned a lot from
the first one, and will incorporate the feedback received from last year’s
attendees to make this an even better event. The Stanford campus will be
the perfect venue, allowing us to increase the number of participants
while maintaining a richly educational association with our conference.”
The development of a certification program for Wireshark also speaks to
the maturity of the project. Certification programs are prompted by a
demand from the user base to gain professional recognition for their
knowledge of, and skill with, a particular product. Wireshark now joins
the ranks of many commercial analyzers with certification programs that
test the expertise of their user base and award recognition to those who
prove capable of successfully completing a process that vets their
knowledge of these tools. Laura Chappell, the creator of the program, is
an industry maven, world-class packet analyst, network troubleshooting,
security, and forensics diva, and lauded trainer and consultant. To
