Canada’s First World War Veteran turns 108: Happy Birthday Mr. Babcock
OTTAWA, ONTARIO–(EMWNews – July 23, 2008) – John Babcock, the last known First World War Veteran to have served Canada celebrated his 108th birthday today among family and friends. Cheryl Gallant, Member of Parliament for Renfrew-Nipissing-Pembroke visited Mr. Babcock at his home in Spokane, Washington to present special birthday greetings from Her Majesty the Queen, the Governor General of Canada, the Prime Minister of Canada and the Minister of Veterans Affairs.
“Mr. Babcock represents what has been called Canada’s ‘greatest generation,'” said Minister Thompson. “I know all Canadians join me in honouring his achievements and wishing him a very happy birthday.”
As we celebrate Mr. Babcock’s birthday, we are also reminded that this year, on November 11, Canada and the world will mark the 90th anniversary of the end of the war in which he served. “When the First World War was finally over in 1918, Canada was clearly a nation that had come of age thanks to soldiers like Mr. Babcock,” said Minister Thompson. “And our returning Veterans continued to build our country through their contributions in our largest cities and smallest villages.”
All Canadians, especially youth, can honour their legacy by learning more about the First World War and by participating in commemorative events. For more information, visit www.vac-acc.gc.ca.
