Canonical To Offer Alfresco Labs Pre-Packaged Within Ubuntu Distribution
Leading open source proponents take first steps to make enterprise
solutions available to combined user base
SAN FRANCISCO–(EMWNews)–Alfresco Software, Inc., the
leader in open source enterprise content management (ECM), today
announced that Canonical, the commercial sponsor of the highly regarded
Linux distribution, Ubuntu, will offer Alfresco
Labs 3 within a pre-built software download as part of its partner
repository. Using the simple apt-get command, end-users can execute a
full installation, with all drivers and relevant dependencies
pre-packaged. This move provides Alfresco with a new platform from which
to reach a rapidly expanding Ubuntu user-base.
“Ubuntu is fast becoming the new star of Linux
as demonstrated by the findings of Alfresco’s
most recent Open
Source Barometer,” said Martin
Musierowicz, VP Alliances, Alfresco Software. “Accounting
for nearly a quarter of all Linux OS rollouts as of January 2008, Ubuntu
was also the fastest growing Linux distribution over the second half of
2007. With the backing of a professional organization such as Canonical,
we’re delighted to be driving the growing
trend towards easy to install and easy to manage open source products.”
Using Ubuntu’s Package Manager functionality,
users can easily select and download new, fully supported software from
Canonical’s partner repository. Because they have been pre-built and
tested, each download comes with the necessary drivers and dependencies
to let users hit the ground running.
“We’re excited to work with Alfresco on
delivering an enterprise-class content management system for Ubuntu
users, for which this is the first step,”
said Malcolm Yates, Global ISV manager at Canonical. “Users
have a great opportunity to assess Alfresco on Ubuntu and see the
benefits these two great Open Source solutions can bring organizations.
We will jointly deliver a pre-packaged enterprise version of Alfresco
later in the year.”
Alfresco has seen major adoption of its open source ECM system
throughout the world. There have been over one million downloads of
Alfresco since inception. The company also has more than 500 enterprise
customers, including the NYSE, Los Angeles Times, Boise Cascade, Sony
Pictures, Activision, Kaplan, FedEx and KLM.
Ubuntu’s management tool, based on Debian’s
APT system, can install a full server product in just a few clicks using
the inbuilt Synaptic Package and helps allow integration between all of
the software packages within Canonical’s
partner repository. A pre-packaged solution for Alfresco Enterprise
Edition will be provided via Canonical’s
partner repository later in the year.
Alfresco and Canonical will be demonstrating this solution at LinuxWorld
in San Francisco, stand # 716.
