Excellent Performance from Taiwan in Cutting Down Carbon Emissions
MOEA Has Awarded 25 Companies and Schools for Excellent Performance
in Energy Saving
Saving US$40 Million and 417,000 Tons of Carbon
TAIPEI, Taiwan–(EMWNews)–The Ministry of Economic Affairs (MOEA) has organized the 2008 MOEA
Energy Saving Award Ceremony on July 23rd 2008,
to commend enterprises and schools with excellent energy saving
performance and promoting energy saving education. The Vice Minister of
Economic Affair, Shih Yen-Hsiang, was invited to present awards to the
winners. According to the MOEA, in order to promote the result of energy
saving and to raise public awareness on energy issues, a total of 272
well-performing enterprises and 99 schools had been awarded in this
ceremony over the past 25 years.
The process of selecting the final winning participating organizations
took two months. Of the 82 enterprises and 40 junior high and elementary
schools participating in this competition, 16 enterprises and 9 schools
with outstanding energy saving achievements were selected.
According to the Bureau of Energy (BOE), the award-winning enterprises
and schools this year have saved a total of 195,000 KLOE, equivalent to
US$40 million in energy costs, and have reduced a total of 417,000 tons
of carbon emissions (equivalent to 2.5 Yangmingshan National Park).
The multidimensional achievements of award-winning enterprises this year
include newly renovated energy saving technologies, and the extended use
of high EER lighting and installation of solar power system. In the area
of schools, energy saving education committee, energy saving training
activities for teachers and the establishment of energy education
programs were introduced.
The four enterprises that won the Distinctive Energy Saving Performance
Award included: Formosa Petrochemical Corporation; Uni-President
Enterprises Corporation; Chi Mei Optoelectronics; and Ling Tung
University. The twelve enterprises that won the Excellent Energy Saving
Performance Award included: Nanya Plastics Corporation; Formosa Plastics
Group; Yulon Motors Corporation; Shinkong Synthetic Fibers Corporation;
Inotera Memories Inc; Kinsus Interconnect Technology; Puli Christian
Hospital; Winsor Hotel Taichung of Pou Chen Group; the Beitun Branch of
B&Q Corporation; the Taipei West Branch of Taiwan Power Corporation;
Tainan City Government; and National Science and Technology Museum.
BOE states that the promotion of energy education is indispensable. In
addition to coordinating with the government’s
energy saving and carbon emissions reduction policies, the award-wining
schools were dedicated to the promotion of energy education. Besides
organizing energy-saving-related activities at times, they designed
teaching agenda to encourage student participation. There are 3 school
winners of the Distinctive Energy Saving Performance Award and 6 schools
winning the Excellent Energy Saving Performance Award.
The MOEA and BOE have put in tremendous efforts in promoting energy
saving concepts to industry and business, as well as energy education to
school over the years. This Energy Saving Award strengthens the practice
of energy saving in the educational and private sectors, and goes
further to pursue sustainable development for the country by maintaining
a balance among effective energy use, environmental protection and
economic development.
