Birmingham, AL (EMWNews) – In the face of unprecedented challenges, the Izquierdo family is reaching out for support from the community to overcome a series of unfortunate events that have left them grappling with physical, emotional, and financial hardships.
In April 2023, the Izquierdo family experienced the loss of their father and husband, leaving them unprepared for the difficult journey that lay ahead. Shortly after, Ashley, the wife, faced severe breathing issues, diagnosed as a deviated septum, and successfully underwent surgery under the Family and Medical Leave Act (FMLA). Following this, she required surgery on both hands for severe carpal tunnel syndrome, leaving her husband as her full-time caregiver while holding down a full-time job.
This period was a challenging time for the Izquierdo family, as they navigated financial, physical, mental, and emotional struggles. Determined to provide for his family, sought a higher-paying job, securing a position remodeling apartments. The additional income helped alleviate some financial burdens, allowing them to address mounting medical debts.

However, unforeseen circumstances struck again leading to immediate surgery and subsequent job loss. The stress and uncertainty escalated, creating an overwhelming situation for the family.
As the Izquierdo family began to rebuild their lives, Ashley’s return to work marked a hopeful moment. Unfortunately, the joy was short-lived, as she experienced a mental breakdown leading to a suicide attempt. After a challenging recovery, the family is now committed to seeking professional help and rebuilding a life filled with hope and joy.

Wilfredo and Ashley have been together since 2004 and married in 2010. Despite enduring numerous hardships, their commitment to each other remains unwavering. The Izquierdo family includes four beloved “children”—three cats, one with special needs, and a lively dog named Jookiba.
