As most of our family and friends know our son malik is going blind in his left eye. We had an appointment today 8/09/18 in iowa city at university of iowa. We were told he has a severe case of keratoconus. I know a lot of you are probably wondering what that is so I’m going to try to explain it the best that I can. Keratoconus is a condition which his cornea is no longer a dome shape it is now the shape of a cone and very thin.
Fibers in his eye called collagen are not strong enough to keep it from bulging into the shape of a cone. Dr. Sindt in iowa city told us about a treatment called cornea collagen crosslinking which is a procedure to help prevent his eye from worsening. It is basically a layer they will put on his cornea to help reduce the damage from keratoconus. If malik doesn’t get this procedure it’s a good chance that he is going to have to have a cornea transplant within the next 6 months. Him being only 19 we definitely don’t want that to happen. So on to why we are creating this go fund me page we were told that his medical will not cover this procedure.
The cost for one eye is $4,500. We normally would never ask for any type of help but this is something that we just can’t handle on our own. So I am asking from the bottom of my heart please if you can donate anything I don’t even care if it’s a dollar please do so. The money donated will be for his procedure and gas money back in forth to Iowa City. If you have any questions please feel free to ask my husband or I and we will answer them.
