IBM Embedded Software Gives AT&T and Sprint Customers Access to Lotus E-mail
ARMONK, NY–(EMWNews – August 8, 2008) – To power businesses and consumers with mobile
Web computing capabilities, IBM (
expanded its relationship with AT&T, Inc. (
other wireless carriers to provide broader e-mail access to their
customers who use IBM Lotus Notes and Domino software on their hand-held
devices.
AT&T and Sprint have certified for use by their customers IBM’s Lotus Notes
Traveler software which enables wireless replication of Lotus Notes e-mail,
calendaring, and personal information management (PIM) data on select
smartphones.
IBM’s Lotus Notes Traveler software can be loaded with all of the set up
information pre-configured. This means it is now “wireless
replication-ready” as soon as the customer starts using his new device.
Standard data usage charges apply.
The devices from AT&T that have this capability are the AT&T 8525, AT&T
Tilt, Moto Q Global, Palm Treo 750, PantechDuo (Mustang C810), Samsung
Blackjack, and Samsung Blackjack II (i617). The devices from Sprint to
include it are the Touch by HTC™, Samsung ACE, Palm® Treo™ 700wx
and Palm® Treo™ 800w. There are more than 140 million Lotus Notes and
Domino licensed users worldwide.
This is part of IBM’s global initiative to promote mobile access to its
open collaboration software to increase customer loyalty as more people,
both business and consumer, migrate daily activities to the mobile Web. In
a sign of the times, more and more mobile device makers and service
providers are partnering with IBM to capitalize on the flexibility and
growing popularity of IBM’s open standards-based software as an alternative
for their customers. These agreements initially focus on Lotus Notes
Traveler, but will expand to include additional IBM solutions that empower
the rapidly growing mobile work force in North America and Europe and
eventually to the emerging markets of Asia, Africa and Latin America.
“Collaboration addresses the needs of workers no matter where they are. A
leading differentiator for wireless carriers will be the richness of the
capabilities they can carry on their networks to empower the growing mobile
work force,” said Kevin Cavanaugh, vice president of IBM Lotus
Collaboration and Messaging Software.
This is another key milestone in IBM’s strategy of making its profit engine
— software — ubiquitous, whether its presence is apparent to the person
using it or not. IBM has revitalized its collaboration business under the
Lotus brand with 15 consecutive quarters of revenue growth culminating with
a 21 percent surge in the second quarter of 2008. A near term outgrowth of
this comeback has been a major push into the mobile market as handheld
devices become more prevalent than land lines, PCs and credit cards.
In recent months, IBM launched software support to enable rich new
applications for Sprint smartphones by embedding Lotus Expeditor software
into the Sprint Titan mobile phone development platform. The open,
Eclipse-based Lotus Expeditor enhances technology by extending its use into
new capabilities.
Additionally, Sprint customers can now get mobile access to their corporate
email accounts on select non-PDA Sprint phones such as the new Samsung
Instinct. Easy access to IBM Lotus Notes and other corporate email
accounts is now available through Sprint Mobile Email Work, as an extension
of Sprint Mobile Email’s existing access to personal email accounts from
other companies. For details visit www.sprint.com/mobileemail.
In another significant development, IBM and Research in Motion (RIM) took
mobile collaboration to a new level by launching the full line of Lotus
collaboration software along with IBM Cognos business intelligence software
on BlackBerry® handsets through a seamless interface, for providing a
desktop-like experience on a handheld device for the first time.
