Jetty web and application server chosen due to technical
functionality, embeddable features and experience of Webtide team
MANHATTAN BEACH, Calif.–(EMWNews)–Webtide, the main developer of
leading open source HTTP server and Java web container, Jetty, today
announced that PaperCut, the
leading solution to monitor, quota and report network printing and
internet use, has chosen Jetty as an embedded component for its
web-based product.
PaperCut tracks the printing of more than millions of users in more than
60 countries worldwide. Services include tracking print quotas, printer
cost recovery and reporting, internet quotas and usage tracking.
PaperCut does not use Jetty a stand-alone server, but as an embedded
component in its web application interface of its print accounting
application. PaperCut’s interface is based on
open source technologies, including Tapestry, Spring, Hibernate and
Apache Derby. Jetty has allowed it and the entire stack to be included
in a simple and easy-to-use installer for Windows, Linux and Mac, so
users across these operating systems can deploy the application at a
click and without any involvement or knowledge about web servers.
Jetty was selected after careful evaluation of various criteria,
including technical functionality. The Webtide team was chosen to
support the project based on its experience with Jetty and its ability
to work with PaperCut’s development team to
embed Jetty, plan for the future and efficiently handle AJAX and
server-push events in a scalable fashion.
Jetty now runs throughout PaperCut’s entire
network of tens of thousands of servers worldwide. Its deployment as an
embedded component requires no configuration or maintenance. Jetty’s
small footprint is designed with scalability in mind, and it works
equally well on small business servers using the PaperCut application to
support a few users to university environments supporting hundreds of
thousands.
Chris Dance, Director of Systems Architecture of PaperCut said, “When
we implemented Jetty, it truly gave us a scalable solution that we could
use as an embedded component. This scalability is key to us as more
businesses and private organizations realize the benefits to themselves
and the environment of tracking and managing activities such as printing.
There was zero configuration and zero maintenance, and Jetty works
without a hitch. We can’t recommend Jetty more
highly. It’s a great web component, and is
backed by a switched-on forward-looking and innovative team.”
“PaperCut’s usage
of Jetty really illustrates the adaptability of it. It can be used in
many different ways, from an embedded component that users don’t
know about, to a standalone web and application server. It maintains
performance and scalability, especially when two-way server
communication is required, whether it is a small amount of users or many
thousands,” said Adam Lieber, CEO of Webtide.
