EDMONTON, ALBERTA–(EMWNews – Aug. 14, 2008) – The Honourable James Moore, Secretary of State (Asia-Pacific Gateway) (2010 Olympics) (Official Languages), will attend and deliver remarks at the opening ceremony of the 2008 Jeux de la francophonie canadienne, which will take place in William Hawrelak Park in Edmonton.
“The Jeux de la francophonie canadienne help minority Francophone communities to flourish, while fostering the development of strong youth who are proud of their cultural and social identity,” said Secretary of State Moore. “Our support for the Jeux de la francophonie canadienne is a concrete example of our commitment to the French language and culture in Canada and the rich linguistic duality of our country.”
In January, the Government of Canada gave $1.2 million in funding to the Fédération de la jeunesse canadienne-française to organize the fourth Jeux de la francophonie canadienne. These games are an opportunity for young francophones and francophiles from across the country to showcase their talent and leadership while celebrating their love for the French language and Francophone culture.
The Government of Canada is committed to ensuring that Francophone and Anglophone minority communities thrive, and also to recognizing the importance of linguistic duality as an economic, social, and cultural asset for all Canadians. The Roadmap for Canada’s Linguistic Duality 2008-2013 identifies youth and culture as priority areas for action.
