Millions of Homes in China Will See Reality Show Sponsored by Canadian Company

TORONTO, ONTARIO–(EMWNews – July 24, 2008) – Lingo Media Corporation (TSX VENTURE:LM)(OTCBB:LMDCF) (“Lingo Media”) a leader in online and print-based English language learning products, announces that its wholly-owned subsidiary, Speak2Me Inc. (“Speak2Me”), a unique, web-based English educational service, is sponsoring the 2008 Speak2Me Jiangsu English Star Television Contest in China. The contest will be open to 1.2 million university students in Jiangsu Province starting in September. The final round of competition will be televised across China in November. This series of contests will be the third to be produced and televised by Jiangsu Broadcasting Corporation (JSBC), one of China’s largest television networks. Jiangsu, located immediately north of Shanghai, has a population of 75 million people and is one of China’s most prosperous provinces.

Speak2Me, which enables non-English speakers to learn to speak English via the Internet, has been available in a limited beta version in China since March, and has already attracted more than 150,000 students to use its site. This online service which is free to users will be supported by advertisers seeking to gain access to this highly desirable market segment. Speak2Me has created a new approach to online advertising, called Conversational AdvertisingTM, which allows brands to put content directly into the English lessons. Speak2Me estimates that there are roughly 250 million English learners in China, and they are eager to have the opportunity to practice and improve their conversational skills.

Lingo Media President & CEO Michael Kraft said, “The invitation-only test period, which we began in March, allowed us to test the viral effects of the service, and the stickiness of the feature set. Now that we’ve attracted users on over 95% of China’s university campuses purely through word of mouth, it’s time for us to make our public launch of version 1.0 with an event that will leverage the power of on-campus events and television to present Speak2Me to millions of learners as the fun, fast and effective spoken English learning solution. This broad high-level exposure will strengthen Speak2Me’s ability to attract and retain high-quality Western advertisers to our innovative Conversational AdvertisingTM model.”

Students are already registering in the contest at www.speak2me.cn. Once registered, they will practice conversational English in simulations and with partners they meet on the site. An online qualifying round in late September will produce a group of 5,000 students. Quarter-finals will be arranged offline by university English departments, and an online semi-final of 500 participants will result in a final group of 24 who will compete individually and in groups – the grand finale will be broadcast nationally.

Qiu Yuanyuan, JSBC’s International Department Director, said, “The format will borrow dramatic elements from recent smash hits like ‘Super Voice Girl’ – often referred to as ‘China’s American Idol’ – including panel and audience-judging and extemporaneous performances. ‘Super Voice Girl’ was a huge success in China, with more than 210 million viewers. This was mainly because the performances were unscripted, creating an element of drama not normally seen on television in China. We’re going to create that same level of excitement for the Speak2Me Jiangsu English Star Television Contest by having our audience vote for the best performances as the finalists improvise dialogues in response to situations we set up for them.”

“We’re delighted to be working with Speak2Me to produce the Speak2Me Jiangsu English Star Television Contest,” said JSBC Vice-President Chen Hui. “English speech contests are very popular, not only among students, but also among our viewers. We expect that the new format, focusing on conversation and dialogue, will appeal to students because it addresses their practical English language learning needs.”

“JSBC has a lot of experience in producing large scale English speech contests,” said Ms. Qiu of JSBC. “Speak2Me is the natural sponsor for this event as its service is directly tied to the students’ performance in this exciting contest. This series of off and online competitions will introduce hundreds of thousands of students in Jiangsu Province to Speak2Me, and the television broadcast will place Speak2Me in front of millions of households across China, all eager to learn how to speak English. The participants in these contests will provide a significant potential pool of new users for Speak2Me’s unique interactive English language online lessons,” Ms. Qiu added.

JSBC has brought together its province-wide network of media and education resources to ensure the contest’s success. The network and Speak2Me has launched a three-month promotional campaign, which covers advertising and editorial content in newspapers, magazines, radio, television, and popular websites.

The Jiangsu College Foreign Language Teacher’s Association has convened a special series of seminars for university English teachers to introduce the contest and Speak2Me’s online service, and English departments are supporting and driving participation in this contest. “Everyone takes pride in the achievements of our students, and the Speak2Me Jiangsu English Star Television Contest gives students and their schools a platform on which to show how Jiangsu students are among the brightest and most talented in China,” said Teacher’s Association President Li Xiaoxiang, who also serves as Dean of the Department of Foreign Languages at Southeast University in Nanjing.

Additionally, Professor Wu Dingmin, Dean of Foreign Languages Department of Nanjing University, said instructors and universities will see Speak2Me as an important resource to help them raise the level of spoken English among their students, and predicted that the contest will draw a wide audience from among Jiangsu students. “The emphasis in foreign language learning has shifted from reading and grammar to being able to speak with accuracy and fluency in real world situations,” he said. “Thus the challenge facing universities and teachers today is to prepare students to master spoken English. What’s missing for most students, however, is the opportunity to speak English with native speakers on a regular basis. Speak2Me provides an engaging way for students to practice spoken English and to help them build their skills and confidence and it is of great interest and use to our students.”

Speak2Me and JSBC plan to follow up in Spring 2009 with a sequel covering Jiangsu and Zhejiang Provinces, along with Shanghai. “These speech contests are the key to our event marketing plan,” said Jonathan Brody, President of Speak2Me. “By the fall of 2009, we expect that the Speak2Me Jiangsu English Star Television Contest will be operating nationally, drawing participants from all of China’s 24 million university students. Also, having already built the online infrastructure for registering participants and running the contest qualifying rounds on Speak2Me, we can run national competitions every month in between the large-scale televised contests.”

Lingo Media also announces two changes to its Board of Directors. The Company would like to thank Bailing Xia for his support and contributions over the past four years as he stepped down from the Board on June 12th. Anthony Lacavera, President & CEO of Globalive Communications Corp., who has strong international new media, software and telecom experience, has joined Lingo Media’s Board. His company has recently secured new wireless spectrum licenses across Canada.
