Sustainable Products and Appealing to Personal Design Tastes May Help Revive Slumping Market for Kitchen Cabinets
NEW YORK, NY–(EMWNews – August 6, 2008) – The kitchen cabinet industry has the potential
to be on the cutting edge of the green transformation, especially through
the use of wood from sustainably managed forests, reclaimed wood and wood
alternatives such as Microfiber or metal, according to “Kitchen Cabinets in
the U.S.,” a new study from SBI.
Apparent consumption of kitchen cabinetry in the United States stood at
$14.2 billion in 2006. However, SBI estimates the market declined 13% to
$12.4 billion in 2007. SBI expects this decline, which came after several
years of accelerated growth fueled by the housing market bubble, to
continue through the end of the decade. SBI forecasts the market for
kitchen cabinets will reach $12.9 billion in 2012 for a compound annual
growth rate of less than one percent.
As the housing and construction market continued to struggle, green
building has been one of the industry’s few bright spots. SBI has found
that the booming green building market will continue its rapid expansion
through 2011, more than doubling in size to $4.7 billion. The market for
green building materials, which had been growing at a rate of 23% annually
through 2006, will slow slightly to a 17% rate.
“As the green building marketplace becomes more sophisticated, technical
and engineering professionals increasingly view buildings from a holistic
perspective that attempts to account for the full lifecycle of a building
and its various components,” notes Don Montuori, vice president of
publishing for SBI. “Component manufacturers are investing in whole
building modeling tools and they are interacting more closely with
engineers and architects who do more ‘integration’ than mere
‘specifications.'”
SBI’s report, “Kitchen Cabinets in the U.S.,” presents data and analysis on
