QUEBEC CITY, QUEBEC–(EMWNews – July 16, 2008) – The Honourable James Moore, Secretary of State (Asia-Pacific Gateway) (2010 Olympics) (Official Languages), today commended the Government of Quebec on its announcement that it will contribute $5 million to the Vancouver Organizing Committee for the 2010 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games (VANOC). The funding will help to highlight Quebec’s culture, heritage and artistic community for a national and global audience.
Quebec is the fourth province to sign an agreement providing support under VANOC’s Contributing Province/Territory Program (CPTP). The program received significant contributions from Manitoba, Ontario, and Newfoundland and Labrador earlier this year.
“The Government of Canada would like to congratulate the Government of Quebec on joining other Canadian provinces as a participant in the CPTP,” said Secretary of State Moore. “The program is a unique opportunity. It will benefit our athletes, give our citizens a sense of involvement, and showcase the rich culture of provinces such as Quebec across Canada and around the world.”
Under the CPTP, participating provinces and territories make a financial contribution toward the success of Canadian athletes, the 2010 Olympic and Paralympic Games (including the construction of event venues), and the Vancouver 2010 Cultural Olympiad. Signatory provinces and territories receive a package of benefits similar to those of corporate sponsors, creating a close association with the Games.
“The provinces’ and territories’ participation will ensure that the 2010 Winter Games are truly Canada’s Games and a resounding success,” added Mr. Moore.
The Government of Canada is a major and committed partner in the task of delivering successful, well-managed Winter Games in 2010. This includes contributions to cultural programming initiatives such as the Torch Relay, Opening Ceremonies and Live Sites.
