SCARBOROUGH, ONTARIO–(EMWNews – Aug. 15, 2008) – The Scarborough Legion will mark two significant anniversaries with Government of Canada support.
The Honourable Greg Thompson, Minister of Veterans Affairs, announced today a contribution to The Royal Canadian Legion Branch #617 (Scarborough).
Funding of up to $2,500, provided through Veterans Affairs Canada’s Community Engagement Partnership Fund, will support a remembrance ceremony on August 17, 2008. The ceremony will mark the Legion’s 40th anniversary and the 65th anniversary of a large-scale Dambusters Squadron mission during the Second World War. As part of the ceremony, Veterans and military personnel will give speeches and local youth will read dedications. All those who served or are currently serving in military and peacekeeping missions will be honoured and remembered.
“Remembrance ceremonies are important in helping communities to repay our great debt to Canada’s truest heroes,” said Minister Thompson. “I’m especially pleased that youth and cadets from Scarborough will participate in the ceremony, as it is up to them to carry their community’s tradition of remembrance into the future.”
The Community Engagement Partnership Fund provides funding to non-profit groups, educational institutions and other organizations delivering remembrance activities and events. Administered by Veterans Affairs Canada, contributions are made throughout the year and encompass both national and community-based projects.
