Lottery Data vs Lucky Dates: Why Most Players Still Ignore the Numbers

New World of Lotteries research finds 64% of players choose birthdays and anniversaries despite access to millions of historical lottery results
London, United Kingdom Oct 13, 2026 (EMWNews.com) – In an age where data influences everything from investment decisions to fitness tracking, lottery players appear to be resisting the trend.
New research from World of Lotteries, a platform specialising in international lottery results and historical draw analysis, has found that the majority of players continue to choose numbers based on personal memories rather than statistics.
The study combined player survey insights with analysis of historical lottery draw data from some of the world’s largest games, including Powerball, Mega Millions, EuroMillions, EuroJackpot, Lotto 6/49 and Spain’s Christmas Lottery.
The findings revealed that 64% of players primarily choose birthdays, anniversaries and other significant life dates when selecting lottery numbers, despite growing access to statistical tools, historical draw information and number frequency analysis.
Only 11% of respondents said they actively use lottery statistics or historical frequency data when choosing numbers.
Players Prefer Meaningful Numbers
According to the research:
- 64% use birthdays, anniversaries or significant personal dates
- 18% rely on randomly generated Quick Pick selections
- 11% actively use historical lottery statistics
- 7% use alternative methods including lucky numbers, family traditions and personal systems
The study also found:
- 72% have used the same lottery numbers for at least three years
- 45% would be reluctant to change their chosen numbers
- 41% worry their numbers could finally be drawn if they stopped using them
- 38% believe their selections hold personal or sentimental value
What the Data Shows
World of Lotteries maintains an extensive database of historical lottery results covering major games around the world. According to its analysts, historical draw data consistently demonstrates that lottery outcomes remain random over the long term, with no number holding a lasting statistical advantage.
Yet while lottery players increasingly search for “hot numbers,” “cold numbers” and number frequency rankings, their actual selections remain strongly influenced by emotion and personal history.
A spokesperson for World of Lotteries said:
“We’ve seen huge growth in demand for lottery statistics and historical number analysis over recent years. Players are fascinated by patterns, frequencies and trends. But when it comes to selecting numbers, most still rely on birthdays, anniversaries and numbers that have personal meaning.”
“The reality is that people may be interested in the data, but they continue to trust familiarity over mathematics.”
The Birthday Effect Remains Strong
Analysts identified a continued preference for numbers between 1 and 31, reflecting the influence of birthdays and calendar dates.
This creates a phenomenon often referred to as the “Birthday Effect,” where a large proportion of players cluster around lower-number combinations despite many lotteries offering a much wider range of possible selections.
While every valid number remains equally likely to appear in a random draw, player choices are far from evenly distributed.
According to the research, this pattern can be observed across multiple countries, lottery products and generations of players.
Regional Trends
The study also identified interesting behavioural differences between markets.
United Kingdom
Lottery players in the UK showed the strongest tendency to keep long-standing number combinations, often linked to family traditions and important milestones.
Ireland
Irish respondents were more likely to describe certain numbers as peronally lucky and reported strong emotional attachments to their regular selections.
Dubai
Among expats living in Dubai, many participants continued using numbers chosen before relocating, often connected to family members and important dates back home.
Spain
Spanish respondents frequently cited shared family participation and cultural lottery traditions as influences on their number choices.
United States
American players were more likely to experiment with Quick Picks and statistical tools, although birthdays remained the most common source of number selections overall.
Data Isn’t Replacing Tradition
The findings suggest that while data and analytics continue to attract attention among lottery enthusiasts, personal stories remain at the heart of how most people play.
The World of Lotteries spokesperson added:
“Lottery numbers often become deeply personal. They represent birthdays, weddings, children, homes and memories. Although statistics can help players understand historical draw patterns, emotions still play the biggest role when choosing a ticket.”
“The numbers themselves may be random, but the reasons people choose them are often anything but.”
