Winston-Salem, North Carolina Nov 11, 2024 (EMWNews.com) – Veterans Day is a time to express gratitude to all who have served in the United States military, honoring their sacrifices and dedication. It’s a day for celebration, reflection, prayer, and remembrance, a moment to feel pride in the service of those who have worn the uniform. Regardless of branch, race, gender, or background, every soldier who has served deserves to be celebrated and, most importantly, thanked for their commitment to our country. A simple “Thank you for your service” can go a long way in showing appreciation to both current and former service members–whether you know them personally or encounter them as strangers.
Today, many young people lack a full understanding of our nation’s history, partly due to the gaps in how military history is taught in public schools. This isn’t because they don’t care–it’s simply because they haven’t been given the opportunity to learn about the sacrifices made by our military over the centuries.
Consider this: ask anyone between the ages of 15 and 45 to name the major wars the U.S. has been involved in, and see what they know. The list includes:
The Revolutionary War
The War of 1812
The Mexican-American War
The American Civil War
The Spanish-American War
World War I
World War II
The Korean War
The Vietnam War
The Gulf War
The War on Terror
This is by no means a comprehensive list–there are many other conflicts we’ve been involved in.
As Americans, it is our responsibility to ensure that all citizens understand the importance of these wars and the sacrifices made. By learning about the struggles, the loss, and the cost of our nation’s military service, we honor the warriors–both living and deceased–who have fought to protect the freedoms we enjoy.
