Aruba Networks Announces Enterprise Fixed Mobile Convergence Solution Using the Nokia S60 Smartphone Platform
Wi-Fi / Cellular Convergence Solution Will Be Demonstrated at CTIA Las Vegas From Ap
SUNNYVALE, CA–( EMWNews – April 1, 2008) – Aruba Networks, Inc. (
leader in adaptive wireless LANs and secure unified mobility solutions,
today announced that its Mobile Voice Continuity (MVC) software for
enterprise Fixed Mobile Convergence (eFMC) applications, will be
demonstrated at CTIA, Nokia booth # 2635 in conjunction with a Voice Over
IP software client built for Nokia’s S60 platform. S60, developed by
Nokia, is the world’s leading smartphone platform, with more than 100
million devices already in the market. Aruba customers can add eFMC
features, including support for the S60, by loading new MVC software onto
existing Multi-Service Mobility Controllers.
MVC software allows dual-mode cellular/Wi-Fi phones to roam seamlessly
between the cellular network and the enterprise wireless LAN, using just a
single phone number provided by the enterprise PBX. Running VoIP over
wireless LAN can enable savings on calling charges, especially for
international calls and international roaming, and users benefit from
high-speed enterprise data services when in the office or working from home
on a remote access point.
Aruba’s MVC software is available as an upgrade to existing Aruba
Multi-Service Mobility Controllers, and is intended to operate in
conjunction with the enterprise’s IP-PBX. No additional hardware is
required to enable eFMC applications.
“Intimate knowledge of the wireless LAN is essential to reliable,
user-friendly operation of the overall system,” said Venkat Kalkunte,
Aruba’s voice architect. “By harvesting status information rooted in the
Wi-Fi infrastructure, Aruba is able to provide seamless roaming and
triggers for Wi-Fi-to-cellular handover, issues that hamper FMC solutions
in which the wireless LAN is treated as just a transparent transport layer.
Accordingly, we’re able to provide the S60 with industry-leading Wi-Fi
connectivity and smooth, fast handovers.”
The industry leading S60 platform, built on Symbian OS, is licensed by some
of the foremost mobile phone manufacturers in the world. The S60
smartphone architecture provides users with both basic and advanced
cellular phone functions in a compact device characterized by a large color
screen, rich communications features, and enhanced applications. The
flexibility of the S60 software allows for various hardware designs and
software configurations. Its award-winning user interface and extensive
support for new mobile services makes S60 an open and scalable solution for
both mobile operators and 3rd party developers.
“As an enterprise mobility company, Aruba supports all forms of eFMC
including feature-rich PBX-centric offerings and service provider-centric
architectures such as Unlicensed Mobile Access (UMA),” said Keerti Melkote,
Aruba’s co-founder and head of products and partnerships. “That said, a
user’s eFMC experience is heavily influenced by the handset, and Nokia’s
S60 devices offer excellent Wi-Fi performance together with the advanced
voice and data features our customers demand. Should advanced PBX features
not be required, Aruba’s MVC enables users to set the optimum mix between
performance and handset selection.”
