LONDON, UNITED KINGDOM–(EMWNews – July 29, 2008) – So far it has worked with my mobile, the satellite navigation system (who’s the genius that invented that?!) and my amazing coffee/chocolate/cappuccino machine…all you do is press a button and off they go.

Now, I’m experiencing real trouble with what I would have considered state-of-the-art technology. I updated my PC to Vista a couple of months ago and started going crazy with music and video downloads. The result of this “new toy” exploitation is that my PC is now sluggishly slow!

Wasn’t it supposed to do all the maintenance work automatically and apparently in the background?!?

I’ve actually discovered that tasks like defragging are not really automatic, but scheduled to run automatically once a week. That means: my PC won’t defrag if during that scheduled day it is switched off.

I also tried to run a defrag manually, but it took ages and there wasn’t even a tiny pie chart to monitor the progress; not to mention, it didn’t even allow me to write an email in the meantime.

What I don’t understand now is: do they look it up in a dictionary before saying a product is automatic? And do they know what it means when they say: “it runs in the background”?

At this point I decided to do some research on Wikipedia and this is what I found out:

“The background, in the context of computer software processes, refers in general to processes that are running with a relatively low priority, require little or no input, and generate a minimum of output.”

To me, what was happening during my defrag, was more of a foreground process keen to drain all my PC resources for an imprecise and obscure amount of time.

And also:

“Automatic: Capable of operating without external control or intervention.”

If I have to schedule it or run it myself, where is the automation?

At this point I truly believe it’s impossible that nobody has thought about making a proper automatic defragger; in a world were we can start our car through an SMS, getting your PC to defrag itself should be elementary!
