Charles Street Partners Selects Nortel WiMAX to Bring Broadband to Rural America

WiMAX Wireless Internet Goes Where No DSL or Cable Wire has Gone Before

LAS VEGAS, NEVADA–( EMWNews – April 1, 2008) – Charles Street Partners(2) will use WiMAX technology from Nortel(1) (TSX:NT)(NYSE:NT) to bring wireless broadband to U.S. residents in rural areas of Arizona and Florida. This will be the first time broadband Internet service will be available to customers in some of these service areas. When completed, the Charles Street Partners’ WiMAX network will offer data and VoIP capabilities to about one million residents and businesses. This is one of the largest commercial build outs of a fixed WiMAX network in the US.

High-speed Internet can help to preserve and enhance the economics of rural communities. It allows farmers to more effectively manage their businesses, and can help rural communities to attract professional individuals as new residents by offering them the ability to work remotely over wireless broadband connections. Businesses in larger cities can also take advantage of wireless broadband in rural areas to tap into the customers, suppliers, and workforce available there, communicating with them more quickly and effectively. The quick and efficient access to high-speed Internet provided by the Charles Street Partners’ WiMAX network will mean massive improvements in connectivity for areas where DSL and cable are not present at all, and where current service is inadequate. Nortel’s WiMAX delivers full broadband services over a 4G wireless network that is more cost-effective for the operator to build and run than other wired alternatives while offering the same high class of service.

“Nortel’s WiMAX will allow Charles Street Partners’ new network of locally run Internet providers to offer Internet speeds to rural residents that can rival any high-speed wired network, anywhere in America,” said Chris Skudder, president and COO, Charles Street Partners. “When Charles Street Partners looked for the best way to bring broadband services to underserved rural communities, Nortel’s WiMAX solution came out on top because it offers the speed we need at the lowest cost-per-megabit.”

“Nortel’s WiMAX is well suited to bring high-speed Internet to rural or remote areas of the world where there has been limited or no availability of broadband because it is too costly and complex to build wireline networks to connect them,” said Peter MacKinnon, general manager of WiMAX and Wireless Mesh, Nortel and chairman, LG-Nortel JV. “Nortel’s WiMAX solution takes away the need for laying cable and gives operators like Charles Street Partners a simpler, cheaper, faster way to deploy broadband to customers that are spread over a wide geographic area. This opens up huge opportunities to bring the benefits of broadband Internet and VoIP to underserved markets.”

Charles Street Partners has secured over $35M in loans to bring broadband to underserved rural markets in the U.S. from the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Rural Development Community Connect Grant Program(2). Charles Street Partners, the parent company for a number of local subsidiaries including SWWG LLC and Hometown Broadband Orlando LLC, will deliver wireless broadband services in Arizona and Florida with plans for expansion into additional markets in the future.

Nortel’s offers an end-to-end, completely integrated WiMAX solution that provides operators with everything they need – from devices and applications to infrastructure and services. Nortel is using its expertise and experience across wireless technologies to help service providers bring broadband to rural and underserved broadband markets around the world.
