Free Weather & Traffic Applications Now on Mobile From the Weather Network

…including TrafficEye Mobile…a North American first

OAKVILLE, ONTARIO–( EMWNews – April 2, 2008) – The Weather Network and MeteoMedia are proud to launch WeatherEyeTM Mobile and TrafficEyeTM Mobile, two new free applications for mobile phone users. These tools provide 24/7 mobile access to weather and traffic information, adding to the services already offered by The Weather Network/MeteoMedia on television and online (www.meteomedia.com and www.theweathernetwork.com).

WeatherEye Mobile and TrafficEye Mobile enhance access to information
WeatherEye Mobile (www.theweathernetwork.com/mobile/weathereye) provides access to current weather conditions, short- and long-term forecasts and current weather warnings for thousands of cities in Canada and around the world. The service is being launched in English and French for BlackBerry® smartphone users from Research in Motion (RIM).

TrafficEye Mobile (www.theweathernetwork.com/mobile/trafficeye) lets users make the most of their travel time by offering real-time access to traffic information, road incidents, traffic flow maps and access to traffic camera images. Initially the service will provide information on the Greater Toronto Area in English for BlackBerry® smartphone users on all mobile carriers and for most Canadian wireless customers across the country (complete list available online). This is the first time in North America that such complete immediate service is being offered for free.

“With the WeatherEye Mobile and TrafficEye Mobile downloads, users will have even more local relevant information at their fingertips – not to mention that they’ll be able to consult them on their phones without a monthly charge,” explained Mark Thompson, director of the mobile divisions for The Weather Network and MeteoMedia, from the International Association for the Wireless Telecommunications Industry (CTIA) show in Las Vegas. Data charges will depend on pricing and packaging from wireless carriers.

Advertising revenues generated within the applications make it possible for the company to offer the service to Canadians free of charge. Over the next few months, The Weather Network and MeteoMedia plan to offer the mobile applications to other devices and cell phone providers and to extend the TrafficEye Mobile to other Canadian cities.

Weather, traffic reports and mobile data content: more popular than ever

Every day, millions of Canadians check the weather and traffic conditions at The Weather Network and MeteoMedia television stations and websites, which are already the most widely consulted sources of weather information in the country. Meanwhile, the number of cell phone users just keeps on growing, with more than 19 million Canadian subscribers in 2007 and more than 60% of households owning a cell phone for personal use, almost 80% in some greater metropolitan areas.(1)

“Traffic and weather are two topics that are very relevant to Canadians and our new mobile applications allow us to continue to meet the consumer’s needs,” Thompson added.

Canadians are expected to triple their use of wireless data in the next three years. Already, 10% of the average Canadian’s monthly cell phone usage is related to wireless data.(2)

Free and simple to download

Both applications are available free from www.theweathernetwork.com/mobile/downloads. For WeatherEye Mobile, users enter their phone number on the website. They then receive a text message with a clickable hyperlink that downloads the application. Installation places an icon on the device screen. Signing up for TrafficEye Mobile is similar.
