New York Eye and Ear Infirmary Upgrades to Network Composer DC40X – Extends Contract with Cymphonix
SALT LAKE CITY–(EMWNews)–Cymphonix has announced that the
New York Eye and Ear Infirmary, a Cymphonix customer for two years, will
implement a Cymphonix Network
Composer DC40X and renew its contract with Cymphonix.
New York Eye and Ear Infirmary installed their original Cymphonix
device, the NC1500, in 2006 after their Value Added Reseller suggested
the hospital use the product for a trial period to increase Internet
security. “We had put other solutions like
SonicWALL and Symantec on trial with our system,”
said Gene Harrison, Network Engineer for New York Eye and Ear, “but
once we integrated the NC1500, it never left our network.”
“Everything is moving online,”
said Harrison. “Applications such as Medicaid,
Medicare, external billing programs, and even programs designed to
research possible drug interactions are now web-based.”
Due to the number of employees accessing necessary applications
throughout the day, New York Eye and Ear considers its content filters
and categories to be rigid. Yet even with the severe parameters in
place, the hospital is able to shape its bandwidth to allow certain
websites like eBay be accessed by employees. “We
allow some personal Internet surfing on breaks but there is absolutely
zero streaming on our network,” said Harrison.
“I hate to think what my job would be like
without (Network Composer),”
said Harrison. “Obviously the threat of
spyware has grown exponentially over the years but since the integration
of the Network Composer, we don’t need an
anti-spyware program. We just don’t have a
spyware problem anymore.”
As with all healthcare providers, New York Eye and Ear Infirmary needed
a solution that would keep its exchange of patient information compliant
with the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA). In
order to prevent private information from being leaked to the web, the
hospital required a product that would eliminate the threat of spyware
infection. “The easiest way to leak
information is through computers infected with spyware,”
said Harrison.
As soon as their original Network Composer was installed, Harrison saw
significant improvement within a week. “It
was a straightforward and painless installation process. Once it was up
and running, I immediately had metrics relating to existing spyware. We
were able to clean the infected machines and I haven’t
had a problem with spyware since.” The New
York Eye and Ear Infirmary will continue to entrust Cymphonix and the
Network Composer with its Internet security and content filtering needs
as it upgrades the Cymphonix hardware to the DC40X.
