Plastics and Health: Natural Solutions Magazine Gives the Lowdown on the Possible Harm to Children and Adults

2008-08-13 06:00:00

BOULDER, Colo., Aug. 13 /EMWNews/ -- Last April the National

Toxicology Program set off a widespread alarm regarding exposure during

pregnancy and childhood to bisphenol-A (BPA), a compound in hard plastic

containers and water bottles that can impact developing genitals, hasten

puberty, and affect behavior in children. Phthalates, a compound in soft

plastic products, is also under scrutiny for similar reasons. Coinciding

with a rapidly growing public awareness about BPA and phthalates, Natural

Solutions: Vibrant Health, Balanced Living magazine's September issue, on

newsstands now, highlights recent studies that reveal plastic's effects on

human health in the article, "A Clear & Plastic Danger."

On July 28th, Congress almost unanimously banned dangerous chemicals in

toys -- the Consumer Products Safety Commission Reform Act -- a bill now on

its way to the President and expected to become law in the near future.

This groundbreaking legislation comes as a direct response to scientists

and parents concerned about the potential toxins in plastic products,

especially those geared for kids.

"BPA and phthalates are in every home in items ranging from toys, milk

and water bottles, and plastic food-storage containers to cosmetics. The

FDA has yet to declare BPA and phthalates unsafe as many countries already

have," said Natural Solutions' editor-in-chief, Linda Sparrowe. "This

article informs people about how these chemical components may affect

adults, developing fetuses, and young children, and offers eight ways to

limit their exposure to them."

8 Ways to Avoid Exposure: 1. Store foods and beverages in glass, stainless steel, or BPA-free containers. 2. Don't wash plastic in the dishwasher. 3. Never microwave plastic. 4. Throw out scratched plastic containers. 5. Limit canned foods. 6. Don't use plastic coffee- or tea-brewing appliances. 7. Buy phthalate-free cosmetics. 8.
