PM Surya Ghar dashboard data highlights a significant difference in rooftop solar adoption as Telangana expands renewable-energy infrastructure and faces rising electricity demand.
Secunderabad, Telangana Sep 14, 2026 (EMWNews.com) – As Telangana continues to expand its renewable-energy infrastructure while electricity demand reaches new highs, recent PM Surya Ghar dashboard data highlights a significant difference in residential rooftop solar adoption between Telangana and neighbouring Andhra Pradesh.
An analysis of the state-level PM Surya Ghar data reviewed by Punarvi Energies Ltd. shows 62,302 rooftop solar installations in Telangana, compared with 366,664 installations in Andhra Pradesh. The corresponding installation capacity was 228.75 MW in Telangana and 1,053.96 MW in Andhra Pradesh.
The difference is notable: Andhra Pradesh recorded nearly 5.9 times as many installations as Telangana in the dashboard data reviewed for this analysis, while its reported installation capacity was approximately 4.6 times higher.
The figures should be viewed specifically in the context of the PM Surya Ghar programme and should not be interpreted as the total number of solar installations across either state.
Rooftop adoption shows a clear difference
The same dashboard data shows 79,198 households covered in Telangana and 371,998 households covered in Andhra Pradesh. Applications also show a wide gap, with 89,339 applications recorded for Telangana compared with 958,142 for Andhra Pradesh.
The monthly data provides another indication of the difference in activity.
Between May and August 2026, the dashboard recorded 17,389 installations in Telangana and 62,475 installations in Andhra Pradesh. Andhra Pradesh therefore recorded roughly 3.6 times the number of installations during these four months.
The numbers raise an important question for Telangana’s solar sector: why is rooftop adoption progressing at a substantially different pace in the two neighbouring states?
The available figures alone do not establish a single reason. Differences in consumer participation, awareness, application volumes, vendor networks, DISCOM processes, housing patterns, electricity consumption and implementation of rooftop-solar programmes may all influence adoption. Further state-level data would be required to establish the contribution of each factor.
Telangana’s broader renewable-energy transition
The rooftop numbers are only one part of Telangana’s energy story.
Telangana’s peak electricity demand reached an all-time high of 19,543 MW on September 9, 2026, according to reports citing the state energy authorities. The figure was 23% higher than the 15,906 MW recorded on the corresponding day in 2025.
The increase in electricity demand makes the expansion of renewable generation increasingly important for the state’s long-term energy requirements.
Telangana has already demonstrated its ability to implement large-scale solar projects. NTPC commissioned a 100 MW floating solar photovoltaic project at Ramagundam in Telangana in 2022, covering about 600 acres of reservoir area.
The state is also continuing to promote renewable-energy programmes through agencies such as the Telangana Renewable Energy Development Corporation Limited (TGREDCO), which implements renewable-energy programmes in the state.
Telangana’s rooftop framework also provides for grid-connected rooftop solar and the feeding of excess generation into the grid under applicable metering arrangements.
The next challenge: converting renewable momentum into rooftop adoption
The comparison with Andhra Pradesh does not suggest that Telangana lacks solar activity. Instead, it highlights a different question for the next phase of the state’s energy transition.
Large solar projects, floating solar, ground-mounted projects and other renewable-energy developments can add significant generation capacity. At the same time, rooftop solar can bring generation closer to electricity consumers and distribute renewable generation across homes and buildings.
For Telangana, the opportunity may therefore be to strengthen both sides of the transition: large-scale renewable generation and wider consumer-level rooftop adoption.
The latest PM Surya Ghar data provides a useful starting point for understanding that challenge. Continued monitoring of applications, installations, household participation, installation capacity and monthly adoption rates can help identify whether the gap with Andhra Pradesh narrows as rooftop solar awareness and implementation expand.
