Thailand Pharmaceuticals and Healthcare Report Q2 2008 Out Now

2008-07-15 19:04:00

DUBLIN, Ireland–(EMWNews)–Research and Markets (http://www.researchandmarkets.com/research/d62bf8/thailand_pharmaceu)

has announced the addition of the “Thailand Pharmaceuticals and

Healthcare Report Q2 2008” report to their offering.

The Thailand Pharmaceuticals and Healthcare Report provides independent

forecasts and competitive intelligence on Thailand’s pharmaceuticals and

healthcare industry.

Thailands US$2.62bn pharmaceutical market

continued to surprise in Q108. After the new government convened for the

first time in January 2008, it appears that the countrys

controversial stance on compulsory licences has reversed. The health

ministry is now looking to review the scheme, alarming activists and

patient groups who were looking forward to inexpensive medicines. BMI

will continue to maintain its forecasts until the issue is resolved. By

2012, the value of the pharmaceutical market will have reached US$3.20bn.

Increasing numbers of doctors in Thailand are leaving the public sector

to work for private companies catering for the burgeoning medical

tourism industry. The Ministry of Public Health wants to stop this

movement because the state-run healthcare system is feeling the strain

through booming patient numbers. BMI believes that the only solution is

to train more doctors. Obviously this will require a boost to the

education budget, but policymakers must remember that the overall

economy has benefited greatly from foreigners travelling to Thailand for

medical services. Driven by a desire to improve healthcare provision,

Thailand has become the latest country to start introducing biosimilars,

or cheap copy versions of patented biotechnology products. Thailands

Biotec is collaborating with the King Mongkut University of Technology

Thonburi (KMUTT) to establish a pilot plant to conduct production tests

for biosimilars. Local researchers could then bring their

investigational projects to the facility, evaluating them for

equivalency and finally allowing them to ramp up to manufacturing

capabilities for commercialisation. This will allow Thailand to develop

its own biosimilars, eliminating the need for imports and bringing

healthcare costs down.

Fake pharmaceuticals are significant problem that reduces the sales and

profits of reputable drugmakers. The research-based pharmaceutical

industry in Thailand signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with

authorities in February 2008, aimed at stemming local trade in

counterfeit medicines. The alliance involves Pharmaceutical Research and

Manufacturers Association (PReMA), intellectual property (IP) groups and

customs agencies. Given that the current fine for counterfeiting

pharmaceutical is just THB5,000 (US$159), BMI believes that tougher

punishments need to be given out. Especially when one considers the

lucrative profits to be made and that counterfeits with a face value of

THB84mn(US$2.7mn) were seized in 2007.
