CARAQUET, NEW BRUNSWICK–(EMWNews – July 15, 2008) – Audiences of all ages will be able to attend a wide variety of plays in Caraquet, thanks to an investment by the Government of Canada.

The Honourable Greg Thompson, Minister of Veterans Affairs and Member of Parliament (New Brunswick-Southwest), on behalf of the Honourable Josee Verner, Minister of Canadian Heritage, Status of Women and Official Languages and Minister for La Francophonie, today announced funding for Production de l’Etoile, also known as Theatre populaire d’Acadie (TPA).

The $44,000 in funding will allow Production de l’Etoile to present its 2008-2009 season in Caraquet, in fall 2008 and spring 2009. The public will have an opportunity to attend 15 plays of various styles, which will involve approximately 20 professional performers. From July 24 to August 14, Production de l’Etoile will also present Estival 2008, a theatrical festival featuring approximately 15 artists in nearly 40 performances.

“The Government of Canada is pleased to provide this support to Production de l’Etoile,” said Minister Verner. “Thanks to the hard work and talent of production companies like Production de l’Etoile, the public can benefit from rich and diverse cultural experiences.”

“The presence of Production de l’Etoile in the Caraquet area allows residents and visitors to enjoy unique artistic experiences,” said Minister Thompson. “Our Government is proud to contribute to making the arts more accessible in all regions of the country.”

“The support we receive from Canadian Heritage will allow the Theatre populaire d’Acadie to greatly increase the theatrical productions it can offer to the audiences and visitors to the Acadian Peninsula,” said the Artistic and General Director Maurice Arsenault. “During l’Estival and the 2008-2009 regular season, a total of seven visiting companies will complement the TPA’s three new productions. Thanks to the Department’s support, artists will have more interaction with audiences through performances and workshops intended to familiarize them with the performing arts.”

Since its beginnings in 1974, Production de l’Etoile, better known as Theatre populaire d’Acadie, has presented more than 100 theatrical productions. The company is the first French-language theatre company in New Brunswick and, year after year, it presents original creations, as well as contemporary theatre and classic plays. The company produces performances based on various artistic trends aimed at both the general public and young people, placing special emphasis on Acadian plays.

The Government of Canada has provided this support through the Arts Presentation Canada Program of the Department of Canadian Heritage. This program gives Canadians increased access to the diversity and richness of Canada’s culture through professional arts festivals, presentations of live professional performances, and other artistic experiences.
