Expert Tips for Better Press Releases

1

Write a Killer Headline

Keep it under 100 characters. Lead with the most important news. Use active verbs. Avoid hype words like "amazing," "incredible," or "revolutionary." Test your headline on a colleague β€” if they're not curious, rewrite it.

2

Answer the 5 W's Immediately

Your first paragraph must answer: Who, What, When, Where, and Why. Journalists decide whether to continue reading based on this paragraph alone. Don't bury the lead.

3

Include a Quote

Add at least one quote from a company spokesperson. Quotes add human voice, credibility, and make your release more engaging. "We are thrilled to announce..."

4

Keep It Brief

Aim for 300-500 words. Remove unnecessary adjectives, clichΓ©s, and fluff. Short paragraphs (2-3 sentences) are easier to read. Journalists are busy β€” respect their time.

5

Never Write in ALL CAPS

Press releases written in ALL CAPITAL LETTERS are unprofessional, difficult to read, and often rejected. Use sentence case. Capitalize only the first letter of each sentence and proper nouns.

6

Always Include Contact Info

List a "Media Contact" at the top or bottom of your press release. Include name, company, phone number, and email address. Journalists need to know who to call for follow-up questions.
