Since December 2013, my brother Darius has been mostly bedridden with ME/CFS (Myalgic Encephalomyelitis / Chronic Fatigue Syndrome). ME/CFS is a debilitating illness that causes dysfunction of the central nervous system, the immune system, energy metabolism, and causes sleep abnormalities. A defining characteristic of ME/CFS is post-exertional malaise, where the fatigue gets far worse after even minimal exertion.

Darius has unrefreshing sleep every single night. He wakes up feeling exhausted as though he hadn’t slept at all. He also has constant brain fog. Activities like preparing meals, washing dishes, having a shower, and driving, are extremely exhausting. He doesn’t look forward to eating because he feels worse afterwards due to the energy needed for digestion. Every day is a struggle for him. He feels like a prisoner in his own body. It is difficult to see him suffer like this. He is extremely discouraged that he has yet to have any improvement in his condition, but he remains hopeful that he will get better one day.

There is currently no effective medical treatment for ME/CFS, so Darius has pursued alternative treatments. He takes over 30 supplements every day along with a variety of super foods and herbs. These are the treatments that he is currently doing and treatments that he will be starting soon: hyperbaric oxygen therapy, intravenous oxygen therapy, UV blood irradiation, ozone sauna therapy, EWOT (exercise with oxygen therapy), bio-electro-magnetic-energy-regulation therapy, FAR infrared sauna therapy, heavy metal chelation, colon hydrotherapy, Rife machine (electron therapy), and intravenous (IV) nutrient and vitamin therapy. These treatments are expensive and are not covered by Medicare or private health insurance.

Darius has been on a low income since he stopped working more than 3 years ago. He has used his savings to help pay for his supplements, doctor’s appointments, naturopath appointments, specialist appointments, tests, and treatments. He has now exhausted all his savings and needs help so he can afford to pay for his supplements and his ongoing and future treatments.
