After Monday’s Bell Market Commentary

On Monday, the markets tumbled and closed lower despite assurances that the

government will stabilize Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac. Investors fear

further bank failures after regulators seized the mortgage lender IndyMac

Bancorp Inc. There are as many as 150 out of the 7,500 banks nationwide

that could fail over the next 12 to 18 months. Light, sweet crude settled

up 10 cents at $145.18 a barrel. The dollar was mixed against other major

currencies. Gold prices jumped. Bond prices jumped. The Dow Jones

industrial average fell 45.35, or 0.41 percent, to 11,055.19. The Nasdaq

composite index fell 26.21, or 1.17 percent, to 2,212.87. The Standard &

Poor’s 500 index fell 11.19, or 0.90 percent, to 1,228.30. The Russell 2000

index fell 10.45, or 1.55 percent, to 664.50.
