Children’s Dental Adventure ‘The Adventures of Billy Molar’ Featured at BIBF 2026

Anne Sprabery’s The Adventures of Billy Molar: The S. Mutans Revolution was featured at the Explora Books exhibition booth throughout the 32nd Beijing International Book Fair, held June 17–21 at the China National Convention Center in Beijing.
Vancouver, British Columbia Jul 30, 2026 (EMWNews.com) – Presented during the fair’s 40th-anniversary edition, the children’s book reimagines a nightly toothbrushing routine as a frontier-style adventure. This year’s fair, the 32nd staging of BIBF, brought together over 1,700 exhibitors from 82 countries and regions, with the United Arab Emirates serving as Guest of Honor and programming designed to engage both publishing professionals and public audiences. Among its literary and cultural initiatives, the fair also reflected continued interest in children’s literature and the ways books can bring together imagination, curiosity, and storytelling.
Part of that conversation centered on how books for young readers can sustain attention while encouraging discovery–a question raised directly in the fair’s World Children’s Book Forum, which examined publishing strategies suited to children’s cognitive and emotional development. Billy Molar was built around that same challenge long before the book reached Beijing. The story begins with a boy named Billy brushing his teeth during his two-minute timer, then drifts into his father’s Old West bedtime tale, where teeth become the townspeople of a frontier settlement and harmful bacteria become outlaws. At the center of the story is Doc Molar, a cowboy-hat-wearing molar who rides his horse, Bristles, into town just as Mayor Dental Floss reveals that the S. Mutans gang has seized control of the town’s xylitol mines. Doc Molar rallies the town’s teeth to reclaim the mines, turning fluoride, teamwork, and healthy habits into the tools of a Western-style showdown.
That structure–a full adventure narrative wrapped around real dental-health concepts–reflects the book’s origins. Sprabery, a practicing general dentist, wrote the story after years of helping patients, especially children, understand oral health in ways that would stay with them. The book extends that goal beyond the story itself: a “How to Brush and Floss” guide walks readers through proper technique, while a glossary explains terms such as fluoride, xylitol, and S. Mutans in language suited to younger audiences. Walter Policelli’s illustrations carry the frontier setting from the cover through the closing scene, giving the informational elements a world to inhabit rather than presenting them as supplemental material.
That emphasis on accessibility also reflects Sprabery’s own professional experience. Raised in Meridian, Mississippi, and educated at Creighton Dental School, she built her career around making health education memorable and approachable for children. Billy Molar became an extension of that philosophy and marks her debut in children’s literature.
Through its blend of humor, imaginative world-building, and an accessible presentation, the book situates everyday oral health habits within an engaging narrative. Its combination of practical guidance and adventure makes it well-suited for school libraries, dental office waiting rooms, classrooms, and home bookshelves.
The Adventures of Billy Molar: The S. Mutans Revolution is available through Amazon and other major online bookstores.
