FUJIFILM Technology Supports Three-Terabyte Capacity in New IBM Drive

At 3:1 Compression, Fujifilm NANOCUBIC-Based Media Provides Density, Transfer Rate to Maximize IBM System Storage TS1130 Tape Drive

VALHALLA, NY–(EMWNews – August 18, 2008) – FUJIFILM Recording Media U.S.A., Inc. today

announced that when used with the new one terabyte (TB) IBM System Storage

TS1130 Tape Drive, media manufactured by Fujifilm for the IBM System

Storage TS1120 is capable of storing up to three (3) terabytes of data on a

single cartridge (using second generation media and standard 3:1

compression.) With an industry leading native data transfer speed of 160

MB/sec, the new system is designed for enterprise customers that require

highly secure, reliable backup solutions for compliance and archiving, such

as in the financial, life science and public sector industries.

“IBM continues to advance technology innovation through its enterprise

storage products and joint development with leading technology companies

like Fujifilm,” said Cindy Grossman, Vice President of Tape and Archive,

IBM System Storage. “The advanced tape cartridge was designed specifically

to bring the capacity, density and reliability necessary to maximize the

capability of IBM System Storage TS1130 Tape Drive.”

This announcement marks another step toward realizing multiple terabyte

media based on the combined technology development between IBM and

Fujifilm. Today data storage systems contain massive volumes of critical

customer and/or business information. Industry experts have stated that it

would take roughly 10 terabytes to digitally store all the millions of

items within the Library of Congress.

“Storing massive amounts of data on disk-only systems has become

challenging as rising energy costs focus attention on the need for energy

efficient solutions,” noted Peter Faulhaber, Senior Vice President, Sales

and Marketing, Fujifilm Recording Media U.S.A., Inc. “Tape-based storage

operates only when retrieving data, so a data center’s operation is more

cost-effective and demands less power from the energy grid — which is a

growing concern in the IT industry.”

The third generation of IBM’s 3592 enterprise Tape Drives, the IBM System

Storage TS1130 uses very sensitive, Giant Magneto-Resistive (GMR) heads to

reduce read errors and provide data integrity and reliability, and supports

drive-based data encryption. Coupled with IBM’s tape virtualization

offerings, large, scalable automation, and tape drive encryption, end-users

benefit from the low cost, high security of tape solutions while

simplifying the management of backup and archive operations.

Fujifilm is a global technology innovator that invests nearly $4 million

every day in research and development, using its enormous library of

proprietary chemistry and advanced thin-film engineering expertise to

create new products and advance existing businesses as customer needs

evolve.

About NANOCUBIC

Already recognized by the industry as an enterprise-class tape solution,

Fujifilm NANOCUBIC technology combines nano-scale particles, a unique

dual-coating process and advanced dispersion techniques to achieve an

ultra-thin magnetic layer that produces higher resolution for recording

digital data, ultra-low noise and high signal-to-noise ratios that are

ideal for Magneto-Resistive (MR) and Giant

Magneto-Resistive (GMR) heads. Engineered for superior archival and

reliable performance, Fujifilm NANOCUBIC technology introduces a new binder

and a super-fine magnetic particle to provide more stable chemical and

physical performance. For more information about Fujifilm data tape
