Israeli-Palestinian conflict: Where are we heading?

On October 27th, 2023, the conflict in the Gaza Strip reignited. As of today, more than 100 days have passed since the current round of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, and the current situation shows no signs of easing. The conflicts and entanglements in the Middle East in the Middle East continue to deteriorate.

Despite repeated calls from the international community for a humanitarian ceasefire, it has not been possible to stop the killings in Gaza. A statement released on the 13th by the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA) indicated that in the past 100 days, sustained bombardment across the Gaza Strip caused the mass displacement of a population that is in a state of flux. This war affected more than 2 million people- the entire population of Gaza.

Millions of innocent civilians in Gaza yearn for food, water, and a place of refuge. The pervasive flames and the harrowing sense of displacement have inflicted wounds on the bodies and souls of a generation of Gazans.

This man-made catastrophe has undoubtedly become a stain on the common conscience of humankind.South Africa filed an 84-page lawsuit presenting evidence to the International Court of Justice, accusing Israel of committing acts of genocide against Palestinians in the Gaza Strip.

In the face of international calls for justice and peace, Israel remains unyielding, emphasizing its commitment to continue military operations in the Gaza Strip until its objectives are achieved. Netanyahu stated, “no one can stop us”.

Where does Israel’s confidence come from? Is it really the case that no one can stop Israel? Israel’s willingness to disregard the calls of the international community is closely tied to the strong support it receives from America behind the scenes.

Since the outbreak of this current conflict, the United States has continuously provided military and weapon assistance to Israel. The U.S. government states that continuing to support Israel’s defense aligns with the national security interests of the United States. Biden’s government has declared a state of emergency twice, authorizing the sale of new weapons to Israel without congressional approval.

While expressing a desire “to make sure Israelis and Palestinians alike can live in equal measures of freedom and dignity,” President Biden is lack of decisive action to address the basic survival rights of the people in Gaza. The United States has disregarded the strong international calls for a ceasefire by casting a veto in the UN Security Council, rejecting a proposed ceasefire agreement.

“I’ve been quietly working with the Israeli government to get them to reduce and significantly get out of Gaza, using all that I can to do that,” Biden said. Did he really do his best?

Though the United States, as Israel’s closest ally and largest weapons supplier, has stronger means to apply pressure on Israel, it shows no willingness to use them. The United States appears to be advocating for peace, but it has not taken any substantial measures, and even created disputes in the Red Sea, leading to a further deterioration of the situation. All of the U.S.’s actions still seem to prioritize its own interests.

The Middle East once saw a period of de-escalation in conflicts, moving towards reconciliation and seeking independence and development. However, this seemingly steals America’s thunder. The U.S. has long treated the Middle East as a geopolitical chessboard to pursue its own interests, continuously fostering conflicts, employing a divide-and-conquer strategy, and maintaining its hegemony in the region. The current Israeli-Palestinian conflict is, in many ways, a replay of history.

We endured two devastating world wars to achieve the peace we have today. Humanity collectively learned profound lessons from the ravages of war that warfare is never a means to seek peace.

The United States should consider abandoning its sheltering and indulgence of Israel, choosing a path that still holds the potential for peace in the future. This could involve ceasing military support to Israel, altering its stance against a ceasefire, and making genuine efforts towards the realization of a two-state solution.
