Berwyn Begins Construction on Cermak Landscape Median

BERWYN, Ill., Aug. 7 /EMWNews/ -- Through support by the

Berwyn Development Corporation (BDC), Berwyn Mayor Michael O'Connor and

members of City Council have approved a proposal to create a landscaped

median along Cermak Road. The project is fully funded by the Cermak Tax

Increment Financing (TIF) restricted fund.

"This is an important step in the continued revitalization and

beautification of Cermak Road, Berwyn's Main Street," said Mayor Michael

O'Connor, regarding the median project.

The project includes the removal of the existing raised medians on

Cermak Road and replacement with landscaped and paved medians. "This

project will unify and boost the image of one of our most visited

corridors," said Michele Skryd, 4th Ward Alderman and Main Street Chair.

The design will complement previous streetscape improvements and will

maintain a human scale along Cermak Road. 7th Ward Alderman Robert Lovero

added, "These enhancements will improve walkability to area businesses and

makes Cermak Road a unique commercial destination."

Demolition began during the week of July 21 after IDOT approved the

project's design and construction plans. Construction will be coordinated

along the east end of the corridor so that the Houby Festival & Parade, an

annual celebration that takes place along Cermak Road from October 3rd -

5th, will not be interrupted. The project will be completed by

mid-November.

With an original project budget of $1.4 million, project bids came in

under budget at $1.25 million after moving through a competitive bid

process earlier in the year. Novotny & Associates, the City's engineering

firm, is providing day-to-day construction management. Upon completion of

the project, Cermak Road will offer greater aesthetic value, additional

greenery, and pedestrian-friendly access to recreation, shopping, and

dining. The streetscape improvement is another component in the City's many

efforts to enhance the quality of life in Berwyn.
