Keating Advisors conducted the survey in April – May 2008 with the support of Curtis Powell, Vice President of Human Resources at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute. Rensselaer commissioned Keating Advisors to assist the university in conducting an independent study with the objective of gathering pay and benefit information from a select group of colleges and universities. Keating Advisors is a Washington D.C.-based strategic human resource consulting firm that specializes in Higher Education.

A summary of the survey findings is below:

Prevalence

11 out of 12 respondents have Adjunct positions.

10 out of 12 respondents have Professor of Practice positions.

Benefits

The majority of schools offer benefits to their adjunct faculty, but they are not the same as tenure-track faculty. 37% (4 out of 11) of respondents do not offer benefits to their adjunct faculty. No respondents offer non-tenure track faculty the same benefits as tenure-track.

There is a wider variation of benefit practices for professor or practice positions than adjunct faculty. 10% of the schools do not offer benefits to the professor of practice positions. 40% offer the same benefits as tenure-track faculty. 40% offer benefits that are different than tenure-track. One respondent with professor of practice positions did not answer this question.

Compensation

The majority of schools do not have formal salary ranges for adjunct positions.

Levels & Promotions

63% (7 out of 11) respondents have formal titles for levels of adjunct faculty. 37% (4 out of 11) do not. The primary factors that differentiate between levels are industry experience, senior level management experience, innovative teaching, among other criteria.

Terms of Appointments

There is little consistency in terms of appointments for adjunct faculty, ranging from quarterly to up to six years.

Governance

Adjunct faculty do not have the ability to vote on governance matters.

Professor of Practice faculty usually do not have the ability to vote on governance matters.
