Gannett announces executive appointments in Louisville, Sioux Falls, and Reno

MCLEAN, Va.–(EMWNews)–Gannett today named Arnold H. Garson president and publisher of The

Courier-Journal in Louisville, KY. Garson was president and publisher of

the Argus Leader in Sioux Falls, SD, and a vice president of the West

Group of Gannett U.S. Community Publishing.

Replacing Garson as president and publisher at the Argus Leader will be

Randell Beck, who currently is executive editor at the newspaper in

Sioux Falls.

Arnie is a top-notch manager, a terrific

journalist and a true community advocate. His talent, sincerity and

enthusiasm make him a great fit for Louisville,

said Bob Dickey, president of Community Publishing. Being

able to replace him with Randell is a great win for Sioux Falls. Randell

knows the community, the staff and the newspaper. The transition will be

seamless.

Garson replaces Denise Ivey, who was named chairman of The

Courier-Journal in June and plans to retire later this year.

Also, Edward S. (Ted) Power was named a group vice president of the West

Group. Power is president and publisher of the Reno (NV) Gazette-Journal.

Teds experience as

a group vice president in the Sun Coast Group will serve him well as he

picks up these additional responsibilities for the West Group,

Dickey said. He will be a great asset to the

group.

Biographies:

Garson began his journalism career in 1965 as a reporter at the

Omaha (NE) World-Herald. In 1969, he joined The Des Moines Register as a

reporter and held various editorial jobs including investigative

reporter, city editor and managing editor. He became editor of the San

Bernardino (CA) County Sun in 1989 and was named president and publisher

in Sioux Falls in 1996. He added the title of group vice president in

2000.

Garson was Gannetts Manager of the Year for

2007. He has a BA in journalism from the University of Nebraska and a

Masters in journalism from the University of California at Los Angeles.

Becks first journalism job was as a

reporter for the Memphis (TN) Press-Scimitar in 1979. He has been a

reporter at The Knoxville (TN) Journal, an assistant city editor for The

Kansas City Star and assistant managing editor in San Bernardino. He was

named managing editor of The News Journal in Wilmington, DE, in 1999 and

executive editor in Sioux Falls in 2001.

Beck won the Distinguished Leadership Award from the American Society of

Newspaper Editors in 2008. He has a BA in journalism from the University

of Missouri.

Power began his career in 1979 as a reporter at The Tennessean in

Nashville, where he also served as a copy editor, sports editor, night

editor and general manager of weeklies. In 2002, he became president and

publisher of the Daily Advertiser in Lafayette, LA, and the Daily World

in Opelousas, LA, and was a group vice president in the Sun Coast Group.

He was named president and publisher in Reno in 2007.

Power has a BA in journalism from North Carolina University.
