The Government of Canada Supports International Balloon Festival of Saint-Jean-sur-Richelieu

SAINT-JEAN-SUR-RICHELIEU, QUEBEC–(EMWNews – Aug. 9, 2008) – Residents and visitors to the Monteregie region will have the opportunity to enjoy performances showcasing local artists at the 25th International Balloon Festival of Saint-Jean-sur-Richelieu, thanks to an investment by the Government of Canada.

The Honourable Josee Verner, Minister of Canadian Heritage and Status of Women and Minister for La Francophonie, today announced funding for the International Balloon Festival of Saint-Jean-sur-Richelieu.

Funding of $25,000 will help festival organizers recognize the participation of the community of Saint-Jean-sur-Richelieu in the growth of the festival over the past 25 years. A special component will showcase local artist throughout the event. Among the cultural activities that will take place from August 9 to 17 are the exhibit “Hommage a Jacques Paul,” a local photographer, the comedy show Drole de region, and a number of other musicians, actors, singers, and entertainers who will delight audiences with their performances.

“The Government of Canada is pleased to announce funding for the International Balloon Festival of Saint-Jean-sur-Richelieu,” said Minister Verner. “We are proud to partner with communities to support activities that celebrate local history, arts, and heritage.”

The Government of Canada has provided this funding through the Building Communities Through Arts and Heritage program of the Department of Canadian Heritage. This program, announced in September 2007, provides Canadians with more opportunities to take part in activities that present local arts and culture and celebrate local history and heritage.

Applications for funding for festivals to be held between January 1 and August 31, 2009, and for community historical commemorations between January 1 and December 31, 2009, must be received by September 1, 2008.
