Developers Create $500,000 in Custom Software for 15 Non-Profits at Ann Arbor Give Camp

ANN ARBOR, Mich., July 15 /EMWNews/ -- The software development

community came together this past weekend to help 15 metro Detroit

non-profits at the first annual Ann Arbor Give Camp. At Give Camp, nearly

100 developers from around the region created custom software to help

non-profits solve IT challenges ranging from Web site creation to data

management.

Ann Arbor Give Camp developer participants camped out at Washtenaw

Community College from July 11 - 13, generously giving their time and

technical skills. Teams also participated remotely from Columbus, Ohio and

Knoxville, Tenn. Examples of work completed by developers at Ann Arbor Give

Camp include:

-- A searchable Web site for the Michigan Humane Society was designed

to help the more than 100,000 animals returned to shelters across Michigan

be reunited with their owners. Currently, less than 20,000 animals returned

to shelters are reunited with their owners.

-- A generic Web-based scheduling application that allows volunteers to

schedule themselves to work events for a nonprofit organization was created

and posted to CodePlex, Microsoft's online open source project hosting web

site, so that any organization can access and use it.

-- Websites were designed for a number of charities that had no web

presence.

In addition to the custom software created at Ann Arbor Give Camp, non-

profits benefited from software licenses for various products donated by

Microsoft, Infragistics, and Telerik, and Web site hosting for 18 months

donated by Verio. Combined, non-profits received more than $500,000 in

software and services.

The non-profit organizations helped through Give Camp: -- Michigan Chapter of the National Children's Alliance -- Michigan Humane Society -- The Wellness Community -- Caring Alternatives -- Forgotten Harvest -- Ann Arbor Hands-On Museum -- Angels' Place -- Washtenaw County Chapter of the American Red Cross -- Child Care Network -- Golightly Academy of IT -- The Information Center -- Center Stage Drama -- Arab American Culture Center -- SDL EQ Enrichment Center -- NOCIRC Michigan "We were very happy to participate and meet the great people that volunteered at Ann Arbor Give Camp," said Pam Smith, who attended Give Camp on behalf of Child Care Network. "The developer team assigned to help Child Care Network worked well together; they listed to our agency's needs and applied the appropriate technology to create exactly what we needed. It was an inspiring weekend ... a technical tsunami of goodwill!" For more information on Ann Arbor Give Camp, including a full list of event sponsors, visit http://annarborgivecamp.org/.
