Our Voice matters, Empowering Burundi’s Batwa Community a GoFundMe by Marlyne Nitunga

Nawe Niwige, founded by Batwa students, aims to sustain and expand educational opportunities for marginalized Batwa children in Burundi.

Bujumbura, Burundi – May 26, 2024 (EMWNews) – Nawe Niwige, a non-profit organization founded by four dedicated indigenous Batwa students, is calling for support to sustain and expand its mission of promoting education and bringing positive change to the marginalized Batwa community in Burundi.

The Batwa people, an indigenous minority group, represent approximately 1% of Burundi’s 12 million population. They endure significant marginalization and discrimination, with a staggering 82% of Batwa having never attended school, according to recent statistics and Nengo Emmanuel, the Batwa representative from UNIPROBA.

In response to this urgent need, the founders of Nawe Niwige, which means “Learn too” or “You can Study too” in Kirundi, launched their organization to provide educational support to young Batwa children. These university students have shown incredible dedication, contributing 20% of their own stipends to help 20 boys and girls with educational materials and fees from primary to secondary school.

However, as these students approach graduation, their stipends will soon cease, threatening the continuity of their efforts. Nawe Niwige is seeking financial support to ensure the sustainability of their mission and to expand their impact. The organization’s goal is to support Batwa children throughout all twelve years of secondary education and reduce the community’s illiteracy rate by 30% by 2035.

Contributions to Nawe Niwige will directly fund school fees, uniforms, books, and other essential supplies, enabling these children to receive a basic education and empowering them to become future leaders within their community.

In addition to financial donations, Nawe Niwige encourages supporters to share their mission and vision with friends and family, furthering the reach and impact of their cause. Together, we can significantly improve the lives of Batwa children and help them realize their full potential.
